Snagging and quality: closing out defects with evidence

Snagging is where quality is either proven or lost. Done well, it hands over a clean, finished job with a record to back it. Done on scraps of paper, it becomes a source of disputes, missed defects and awkward conversations at handover. The difference is mostly about evidence.

What snagging is

A snag is a defect or a piece of unfinished work that needs putting right - a chipped surface, a missing seal, something not built to spec. Snagging is the process of finding those items, getting them fixed, and confirming they are done, usually intensifying as a project heads towards handover.

Why it goes wrong

The classic failures are all about ambiguity and follow-through: a snag scribbled on a notepad with no photo, an argument over exactly where and what it was, and lists of defects that get raised but never formally closed. Without a clear record, snagging turns into he-said-she-said, and items slip through to handover.

The single biggest improvement is to remove the ambiguity: mark the snag on the drawing at the exact spot, and attach a photo. Now there is no question of what the defect is or where it lives, and whoever fixes it knows precisely what they are looking at.

Close the loop

Every snag should move through a clear lifecycle - raised, assigned, fixed, then verified by someone other than the person who fixed it. That final verification is what lets you say, honestly, that the work is done - not just that someone marked it done.
